Look up next time you’re wandering around Shoreditch, and you’ll see in the details of the buildings around you evidence of creative industries past. From tailors to ironworkers to small manufacturers, Shoreditch has a long history of housing skilled workers and craftsmen. Architectural details like loophole bays with taking-in doors, wall cranes and old signage hint at the furniture showrooms and workshops that proliferated in the late 1800s. These days, the old buildings once used for manufacturing are more likely to be home to design studios, boutiques and tech companies.
